» Want into the PlayStation Home Closed Beta Test?
From the US Playstation Blog
Today we're announcing the expansion of our closed beta test for PlayStation Home to begin at the end of the month.
Later today, the PLAYSTATION Store will be updated with a PlayStation Home theme. By downloading the theme, users are submitting an application to join the PlayStation Home Beta test community. We will be using a variety of criteria including activity on the PLAYSTATION Network to determine eligibility for the Beta community. Existing beta testers have automatically qualified to be part of the expanded beta. We're really excited about this milestone and want our most loyal fans to be a part of the evolution of PlayStation Home.
In Europe, SCEE is also beginning their expanded closed beta, directly targeting consumers who have been most active on PLAYSTATION Network and PLAYSTATION Store. SCEE will be in email contact with their PSN audience very shortly.
» Naughty Dog: PS3 Running at Only 30-40pct
From edge-online.com:
The PlayStation 3 has churned out some great-looking games, but Naughty Dog co-lead designer Richard Lemarchand says Sony's Edge toolset will unlock the true potential of the Cell processor.
"There's a set of tools called Edge that were developed on the Naughty Dog premises, actually, by a group of very, very senior games programmer, some from Naughty Dog and some from elsewhere," Lemarchand told ThreeSpeech.
"...That's why we think we're probably only using 30 or 40 percent of the power of the PS3 right now, and there's this great, untapped potential."
Lemarchand called the tools "low-level libraries" and said they are available for free to third-party developers.
» Rumour: Looming PS4 cycle was real reason for Harrison's departure from Sony
From videogaming247.com:
Our ears are so close to the ground they're all mossy. Highly placed sources told VG247 today that the real reason for Phil Harrison's departure from Sony was that work is now starting on PS4 and deja vu was setting in.
"He could see he was about to get involved in another PlayStation cycle, and obviously wanted something new," we were told. "The same thing was happening again and he'd been through it enough times to want to move on."
» Sony: We don't need the 'senior citizen' gamers
From gamesindustry.biz:
Sony Computer Entertainment America's Scott Steinberg has told GamesIndustry.biz that the company has no desire to mimic Nintendo's strategy to hook in the older demographic of people who have never played videogames before - because by getting PlayStation 2 users to upgrade to PlayStation 3 will give them a "hands-down" next-gen victory.
"I think the reality is that we will win hands-down if we convert the PS2 owners to PS3," he said. "When we look at the total available market, we salivate at the notion of converting our existing PS2 universe.
"Every million units we drop into the PS2 is an annuity that's going to pay out later on for PS3 upgrades, and we've got some interesting ideas on how to reach out to those PS2 owners in the US and convert them up.
» Vista running on PS3 and more BD-J homebrew
From ps3hax.net:
mopx0, has found a way to run Windows Vista on PS3 (via emulation). As you can expect Vista runs terribly slow on the PS3, and is pretty much unusable but still cool that it was done.
The entire process takes about a day to install, and booting Vista takes roughly 25 minutes. If your feeling up to installing Vista on your PS3 for any reason you can read the full tutorial on how to do that here. Alternatively you can also run XP as well (slightly faster), you can read more about that here. (You need Linux running on your PS3 before you can emulate Vista/XP).
In other news two more reported BD-J homebrew have appeared [PS3 Pong with AI support and Chromium Wars (Bunny Blaster Mod)], both being modifications to prior releases. You can download and view more information about each one below.
