» Sony promises Leipzig 'blockbuster'
From mcvuk.com:
At an exclusive European media briefing, SCEE president David Reeves told MCV that global announcements and ‘blockbuster' revelations will emerge from the Leipzig event, and even backed the possibility of a London-based show.
"It's not just Euro-centric - there will be some global announcements," said Reeves. "The announcements we make will be more important for the local markets that come to Leipzig.
"And it's not just Leipzig, it's Game Convention - if we had one in London we'd do it in London. We have a number of things which is real blockbuster stuff for Europe."
» PS3 high-tech gamble
From guardian.co.uk:
UK Playstation boss Ray Maguire has admitted what we already knew, namely that the PS3's slow start was due to the high RRP.
"The gamble that Ken Kutaragi took with the PlayStation 3 was to put in a high level of technology, so it has been a bit slow to market in some respects, but we're now seeing how people are starting to understand how the technology works. Historically, the installed base of any hardware platform has been proportional to its great gameplay, but also very attached to the RRP. That was the second part of Kutaragi-san's gamble, as that hardware made the machine more expensive. But now we're in the second part of the PS3's cycle, and since the price came down, there has clearly been an uplift."
» Hirai reassures 40GB PS3 owners
From mcvuk.com:
Talking in the wake of SCEE's announcement that it would be phasing the 40GB model out in Europe to make room for a new 80GB SKU - Hirai's personal idea - he added that the move was proof of PS3's ability to ‘evolve'.
Hirai told MCV: "The PS3 is a console that evolves and specifications will change over time. Ultimately, if the consumers require a higher capacity hard drive, the ability to do that is there. "40GB is obviously less than 80GB, but it's still a high number and a very powerful machine. We strive to evolve and offer the most compelling value we can at any point in time. If consumers require extra hard drive, they can just swap it out.
» No Gran Turismo 5 before 2010? Prologue Damage Modeling still WIP
From ps3.ign.com:
* IGN: Earlier this year, you mentioned that Polyphony was working on a patch for GT5 Prologue that would add damage modeling to the game later this year. Is that still happening? * Kazunori Yamauchi: Our plans haven't changed, and we're working on it. But this is Gran Turismo, so it might be a little bit late. [laughs all around]
* IGN: Lastly, what's the status on the full Gran Turismo 5? Where are you at in production? * Kazunori Yamauchi: Of course after this next update, we're going to have another update later on in the year. There's no plans in the works for GT5 yet - that might be 2009, or it might be 2010... But we're totally focused on getting the updates through for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, and that's all we're focused on.
» Famitsu President: ‘PS3's problems are being resolved'
From mcvuk.com:
Speaking exclusively to Famitsu media partner MCV, Hamamura said: "The PS3's penetration pace has been slower than I expected. Its higher price tag and software development difficulties have been major causes for stalling the growth of its installed base. However, these problems are gradually being resolved. "If the console gets another price cut by the year-end shopping season, I believe its penetration pace will become accelerated."
» WipEout HD Causing Seizures?
From thesixthaxis.com:
Last week we reported that as far as we could tell, Wipeout HD was still on track. Shortly after that, though, this appeared on Eurogamer, with David Reeves explaining that the reason we've not got a firm release date is that "there is a specific technical problem with WipEout that we have to solve" and that the problem is "a really, really tricky technical problem that no region has been able to solve at the moment."
One possible explanation for the silence is that the game's blisteringly fast 60 frames a second refresh rate coupled with the strobing background scenery and constant bobbing of the craft is causing electrical disturbances in people suffering from epilepsy. Certainly games of this ilk have been known to cause motion sickness, but the high-tec imagery used in WipEout HD and the flashing lights might well be adding up to more serious issues, and does go some way to back up what Reeves said last week.
